Meet the friendly team at Downtown Dental

About Us

Dr Roger Tiang

Lead dentist. Fixing teeth, fixing computers, fixing furniture, walls and general handyman things

Dr Roger Tiang is a graduate of the University of Otago and has been in private practice in New Zealand for over 20 years.  He was born and bred in Hamilton before heading to Otago University to gain his dental degree. He spent his initial time in private practice in Wellington before shifting to Auckland to become a partner at Downtown Dental.

Dr Tiang has been a member of a number of local, national and international dental associations including :

and he was one of the founders of the New Zealand Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (NZACD). He has also served on the committees of both the NZACD and NZDOS.

Dr Tiang firmly believes that as a healthcare professional, he should continue to enhance his skills and knowledge as a clinician and has travelled extensively to further his knowledge at some of the most highly regarded private post-graduate educational facilities in the world, such as the Kois Centre in Seattle and the Fahl Centre for Aesthetic Dentistry in Brazil.

Along the way Dr Tiang has developed an interest in orthodontics as a natural adjunct to cosmetic dentistry with a special interest in combining the two for the ultimately most conservative and healthy route to a beautiful smile. In response to the demands of modern society, Dr Tiang has developed a particular interest in “stealth orthodontic” techniques, straightening teeth with minimal visibility. His most recent achievement in this respect has been being recognised by Invisalign as New Zealand’s first Platinum Provider recognizing the experience he has developed in this technique.

By using orthodontics to move teeth in addition to cosmetic dentistry to enhance the appearance of the teeth he is able to provide his patients with solutions which look fantastic and will last as long as modern dentistry is able to provide.

If you’re wondering what it might be like to have Dr Tiang as your dentist then it might help if you know that he is interested in chatting about these kinds of things:

  • Fatherhood/Parenthood/Kids
  • the MCU
  • dining out in Auckland
  • travel
  • the developments in the downtown area such as the City Rail Link
  • the All Blacks

Jocelyn Henry

Jocelyn Henry

Practice manager. Mother hen

Jocelyn is a native Aucklander and grew up in the Cox’s Creek area back in the days before Ponsonby was the posh suburb it is today.  She started at Downtown Dental a long time ago when it was at 2 Queen St in Air NZ House (now the HBSC Building) but moved to outback Queensland for 15 years before returning to Auckland for personal reasons.  Her move coincided with Downtown Dental’s search for a new practice manager so she was hired (again) on the spot.  That was over 16 years ago and her familiar smiling face has greeted our patients ever since

Jocelyn really enjoys spending time with family and friends. Especially little ones and she will be the first to volunteer our waiting room as a creche while you have your dental appointment.  She tries to get across to Australia where her 3 daughters and 2 grand kids all live as much as possible plus has mastered Facetime and Viber to keep right up to date.  In her spare time she enjoys power walking, reading a good book and a spot of gardening.

Ellen Wieser

Dental Hygienist / Oral Health Therapist

Ellen gained her Bachelor of Health Science in Oral Health from Auckland University of Technology in 2014.  Since then she has worked for the Auckland Regional Dental Service treating school children and in private practice.  She joined Downtown Dental at the beginning of 2019 to fill some very large shoes when our amazing hygienist Kerrie moved with her family to Tauranga.  We are pleased to report our patients seem to love Ellen just as much and experience the same high level of care we have always strived to provide.

Ellen likes nothing more than to get cozy with a good book

Rebeka Mester

Dental assistant

Rebeka is originally from Hungary but trained and worked in London.  She arrived in NZ about a year ago and recently took up a position with Downtown Dental.  Her experience working at numerous practices in Europe has meant she has been able to slot into the team smoothly and pick up our systems really quickly.  We are really happy to welcome Rebeka to the family.

Outside of work Rebeka has her hands full with her two dogs.  Previously trained as a professional sushi chef she also spends her time in search of the perfect piece of salmon

Jane Chisholm

Jane originally worked at Downtown Dental in the days of Dr Ian Littler and returned to us more recently filling in as a receptionist when we are short staffed (such as when Joce heads to Aussie to see the grand kids).  It is a real treat to have Jane and her bubbly personality around from time to time.

Jane and her husband are actually farmers.  No not dairy or sheep though.  They own a Christmas tree farm.  And apart from caring for acres of trees she has a couple of grand kids, one of which is in Melbourne which is a happy coincidence as Jane is a regular to go across to watch the Melbourne Open.
